Can you be friends with someone who rejected you? Or should you cut off contact?

So my best female friend of 3 years rejected me when I told her I had feelings for her before she left for college. She said she was still healing from her previous relationship but then she ends up in a relationship with this other guy. She still talks to me like I'm her friend but, I kinda want to end contact with her because I just feel like its a waste of time now that she has a BF. She's coming back this weekend since its her little sisters b-day (Im friends with her little sister too) and I'm pretty sure she's gonna want to hang out...but I'm not sure I want to because her Boyfriend will be there.

So it got me wondering if you could be friends with someone who rejected you or should you end contact with that person?

i voted that you can be friends, but it can be very difficult. I was friends with a guy who I knew liked me but didn't admit it for a while. then I started talking to another guy (with intentions of dating him--not just as a friend) and he (my friend) got very jealous and started badmouthing the guy I was talking to. it's a long story overall, but he eventually admitted he had feelings for me. eventually after we talked it all out he told me he didn't feel like he could be friends with me anymore. I don't know if you're in kind of the same situation where you're jealous, but I would say it would be for the best, if you're jealous, if you ended the friendship. jealousy can eat you alive.

Yea I'm in kinda the same situation, what happened after he said he didn't feel like he could be friends with you anymore?

i told him I felt the same way, because I was really hurt that he was bashing this guy and saying I was so naive and that this guy only wanted me to have sex and stuff (which was not true--he doesn't even know him!). but we deleted each other on facebook and we deleted each others numbers off our phones...

we weren't as close as it sounds like you are with this girl, so it wasn't much of a loss for me

definitely. I rejected my guy friend when he told me he was into me. and while it was awkward for a while, we're still really good friends. he's still the one I turn to when I need someone to listen to me rant

Have you ever thought if maybe he holds something against you? Like in the back of his head? Like maybe he's just putting up a fake smile?, just a thought because that's what I'm doing in my situation

Don't ruin a friendship just because of something like this. At least she was honest with you, can you really punish her for this. I know it will be a little unfortable at first, but pretty soon, it should all go back to being a comfortable friendship. We all get rejected, we just move on.
