Is being cordial to someone you don't like being fake?

If you guys don't like each other but still can have a nice conversation is that being fake?

Most people say that's being a respectful adult but wouldn't that still be pretending to get along? You know very well they don't like you and you can't stand them either. What do you think?

Not at all. I did that just the other day. Laughed with him even, but there was no pretense. Everyone knew how we felt about each other, and it wasn't that we were trying to hide it, but there was just no reason not to be cordial.

Imagine this scenario: You're duking it out with your sworn enemy, and you've been fighting since sunrise. It's now noon, and you've just been informed a nuke is about to strike close enough that you're both certainly gonna die. Are you gonna keep on fighting? Walk in opposite directions until the nuke hits?
If it were me, I'd sit down with a snack, a cigaret or a drink and wait out the nuke because I'm tired, and if my sworn enemy wants to join me, they're welcome to. Why not? Being petty or holding on to grudges at this point isn't gonna help anyone.

Not necessarily, you dont have to be mean, snotty, or disrespectful to someone you dont like... you dont have to be nice either but you can have a respectable conversation, but I suppose you can fake niceness so it really depends on how much you have to fake it... if that makes sense lol

This is something I struggle with, too. I'm someone who has strong opinions and impressions of people, but unless they treat me like shit or force me to go honey badger on their ass, I treat them politely and cordially.

Why burn a bridge when I don't have to? You never know who that person knows, nor what they're going through.

But some people do find me a bit hard to pin down because of that. But frankly, I'd rather have that. An air of a bit of mystery helps a lot.

Yes, it's fake according to me... I usually have to extract fake energy within myself to talk to someone I don't like with a fake smile.

I can't imagine how awkward it must be to some people that have to be cordial to their in-laws. That sucks... to be with the love of your life but stuck in a conversation with their parents whom clearly don't like you and vice-versa.
