Turn my back on them no, but I wouldn't be very comfortable around them either. I'd need some time to metabolize the news.

Yes, that's a tough pill to swallow. It happened during a very dark time in my country and a lot of older people are being convicted because of what they did during their time serving in the armed forces

I'm sorry that one of your close family was involved in their crimes, I can only imagine how horrible it must feel. I think it's natural you still love them but I also have to say that if they committed crimes it's just they face justice for that. Still, I'm really sorry that you and your family are going through the pain of seeing your relative being put to trial and to hear the crimes they committed, and I hope you can recover from this horrible experience and still love them even if they did those things.

I can sort of relate with having relatives who served in dictatorial regimes since during WW2 my country was a fascist dictatorship. My grandfather was a partisan but his brother and uncle were fascist blackshirts, and they both got killed during WW2 - his uncle by the same partisans my grandfather served in. His brother died during the invasion of Russia. My wife is Austrian and one of her oldest relatives was a concentration camp guard, he served 15 years in prison for that.

Thank you Jean, yes indeed they should pay for their crimes, and I still love them regardless of the mistakes they made even if they were this big. Family should stay together in good and bad times

Technically you could classify any criminal act as a "humanity" crime. What specifically do you mean?

For example someone who used to be a cop and abused people, or people who were involved in political persecution, or related crimes.

I've got a friend who was a cop who was convicted of assaulting a guy he was arresting & served time for his actions (so did the guy he arrested)

Political "persecution" is a matter of perspective in the West. These days you're accused of hate crimes for saying you hold a different point of view - especially if you lean more towards a conservative bias.

So no, I'd stand by them. Mainly because I know the character of the people I choose as my close friends.

Orwell said in times of universal deceit, the Truth becomes the ultimate "hate speech". We're certainly living in a time when we can't trust what most news outlets present. "News" today is nothing but propaganda from the bias of whoever buys the advertising time in the broadcasts.

Being a cop is very tricky these days because no one can tell when it's too much or when they step their boundaries.

Family is family. Just like with me, my friends are family. If one of my family, blood or not, was involved in a felony, I may not like it, but I can't abandon them. They need someone in their life that stands beside them, regardless of what happens.
