Why are my stepdad and my almost ten-year-old brother so prejudiced against gay people?

This is not anything new; my stepdad is extremely prejudiced against the entire LGBTQ community, and my brother often uses "gay" as an insult (not in an immature way like some homophobes do, but he uses it to refer to boys that wear pink, purple or otherwise "girls'" clothing). I am going to try my damnedest to keep this as apolitical as possible, as I will refrain from mentioning any candidates or parties.

We come from a very Christian Armenian culture (although my brother and I were born here in Southern California). Now from what I recognize, many people who use a religion to spread hatred in the Americas and Europe claim to be Christians. This is a very common method. However, unlike many of the evangelists or other conservative Christians, my stepdad (raised a Catholic) actually uses and reads the Bible. Tonight I heard my 9-, almost 10-year-old half-brother saying something along the lines of "That is so gay." His dad responded, "Yeah, that's bad." He was asking why he was wearing girls' clothes and insists that he needs therapy (I thought conversion therapy was banned already in the States?). This really pisses me the fuck off because the Bible teaches its readers to love one another, also known as "Love thy Neighbor."

My whole college in Pasadena is pro-LGBTQ. In fact I am currently taking a history class and a political science class and my mind would never have been more open had I not have been taking these two classes.
