Why do my friends make fun of me for using words like disdain or hubris?

Because they're simple minded and lack a decent vocabulary, so they want to bring you down to their level by mocking you. They don't want you to "sound" smarter than they are, even though deep down they know you are. :)

Because people don't react well to things that are different. My friends used to make fun of me because I used big words. We laughed together, I kept using big words and we moved past it. Some people feel threatened by it or wonder why you need to talk that way when they don't. Why don't you just ask them. If they are truly your friends you will have a thoughtful discussion and you may learn more about each other that you didn't know before. I assume you all have excepted differences in each other and this is no different. If they wish to remain your friends after you speak of your concerns then life is good and if they don't then they were never really your friends. Friends come from all areas of your life throughout your lifetime. Some will come and go. Look for friends that will enrich your life and you theirs. Good luck.

Probably cos a lot of times people who use big words... Aren't jus using them because they know these words and they use them Cos they best describe the point they're trying to get across...

But because they're using them on purpose to try and sound smarr... And sort of show off... Like they're doing it for attention or something like "hey look at me everyone, I used a big word I looked up in dictionary... Someone please notice me and see how smart I am!!!"

Those people seem like dorks.. that's why we take the piss... It doesn't take much intelligence to look up words and remember them... So people who are always using big words seem like show offs... But people who occasionally use big words to describe their points better... Those people are fine

Why do they laugh. Because they think you shouold know what they mean. I think it's far more civilized to act compassionately in any relationship than to know the definition of soime words. And that makes me think they are just making fun of you because you're making them feel inadequate. If that's the case, how good of friends can they be? Cause they're stupid b***es. Most people don't use those words. I never use hubris but I still knew the definition. I use the word disdain fairly frequently. Most people try to communicate with people using words they think the other person would know. To deliberately do the opposite suggests arrogance.
