I'm just worried that if he doesn't like me, then he'll tell their whole family, and they wouldn't let me hang out with them anymore, and we've been friends for a really long time and I wouldn't want it to ruin anything. Also if he did end up liking me and then breaking up with me, I wouldn't want it to effect my friendship.

After I wrote that, I thought the same thing. If you date and it doesn't work out, you risk damaging your friendship. I realize, but still think it's worth trying. I doubt he would "tell everyone" or hate it. Worst that would happen is he doesn't feel the same and you go back to being friends.
