How to start a family tree? It all seems just too much and overwhelming. There're plenty of good apps I haven't come across yet. Any tips?

Family trees are enormously complex endeavors and unless you are serious about it and ready to invest a lot of time, energy and of course money, you will quickly realize that this is a daunting task.

There are a few major sites that do an excellent job but unfortunately, you will quickly realize that if you are not paying a premium yearly (or semi-yearly) membership, you will quickly come to a dead end.

Most of the information available is only available to those that pay $200-$300 yearly fee to the sites that are actually capable of providing serious data to those willing to pay.

You can always start with the free and limited version of a number of sites but you will quickly realize that create a really good family tree is a huge task.

I have the free version of ancestry and I have about 900 people on my family tree now (on my dads side). My mum has her side of the family tree on her account with about 300-400 people so I could add all that in too. I did start off with the paid version as I was sharing an account with my mum but then I got my own free one.


There’s a website that holds a lot of information for local ancestry/history like this which I use to help me but it’s only for my area. Maybe look into local archives if possible?

There are some websites that are dedicated to this sort of thing. I would start there. Just keep in mind, they are expensive due to the amount of work involved.

Honestly, unless you have unlimited time on your hands, a website designed to do that is your best bet.
