How long does it take for a man to date again if his wife dies during childbirth?

There is a new co-worker who is a father of 7 year-old twin daughters. His wife died several hours after giving birth to the twins; some type of complications or something.

He actually grew up with her in the same town, meeting way back in 2nd grade. Then they fell in love later in their late teens, got married and she died after childbirth. He remained a single father and hasn't dated any women yet. His friends and some of his relatives have tried to get him to meet other women but nope, he isn't into it.

How long would you say it would take a man to date again if he lost his wife during childbirth? If that was you, would 7 years be enough time for you?

Honestly, it depends on the person. Some people can jump right into dating after a few months, other times, it takes some people a decade longer.


Think about it, they were childhood sweethearts, and he is probably riddled with guilt because of his wife’s passing… He is probably traumatized as well. He probably won’t love anyone like he loved his wife, and he’s probably thinking about his wife constantly.


With his situation, I 100% understand why he hasn’t tried dating since then. I probably wouldn’t want to either. He has two twin children to care for and wants to give them a good life. He will date when he feels ready, it could be in 1 month or in another 10 years… It’s his healing journey, his children, work, and his life that he needs to focus on right now.

The sad part (or I guess bittersweet) is he sees his late wife in his twin girls. Both are said to resemble their mother's facial looks and smile when she was a kid.

There's no limit on time. A lot of the time you don't get over grief, you just learn to live with it.

It’s possible he would feel that putting himself out there would dishonor her memory. Or maybe his priorities are solely on working and taking care of his kids. Personally in his situation I don’t know if I would ever be emotionally ready again. You can’t really put a time frame on grief.
If this is a guy you’re interested in, you could try striking up conversation. Just don’t get your hopes up.

There isn't a right or wrong answer. It depends on the person. My mom knows a man who lost his wife and he said that she was the only one for him and has no interest in dating anyone ever again. It's not up to me, you, or anyone else to tell him he's wrong.

If his kids are happy he is happy and just because he does look for another woman does not mean he does not want one maybe he not rushing it. someone in time will cross his path that he think is right for him and his family everyone goes through grief in there own way it takes time.

7 years? Nope.. literally I don't think that is something I could EVER recover from.

That's what it seems like. He just wants to dedicate his life on working and trying to be the best parent ever. When the girls were old enough to speak and they asked for mom, he would tell them ''Mommy is in heaven, watching you''.

Sometimes quickly sometimes never. There are a lot of people but it's going to be hard to find someone to replace the one you were willing to promise your life. Don't force people to date because that's just creepy harassment like Harvey weinstein
