I'm currently friends with several girls. Some of them I would consider dating, because I find them attractive and interesting to be with, but because they are my friends I make no attempt to initiate anything, or flirt with them. I am also not just hanging out and waiting for them to make a move, either. Besides, some of them already have boyfriends.
My best friend, for example, is a girl. She has a boyfriend and if I ever do get married, she's the one who's going to be my "best man". I really like what we have between us and would never do anything to try ruining her relationship with her boyfriend, and she knows that.
So yeah, I do believe men and women can be just friends. There might be some attraction in there from either parts, but as long as they both know how to handle it and are willing to do so, it'll work out. I think it's important to have friends of the opposite gender, because it's a good way to understand them.

Some people can handle it, some people can't. If I have any romantic interest in a person I consider a "friend," then its bad news. However, if its a girl I consider "one of the guys" then there aren't any issues and they are just as fun to hang out with as the guys.
Yes, I have many men friends. My best friend is a man. We've been friends for 17 years. Nothing more.
