I heard these girls say they like to be friends with pretty people but don’t want them to be prettier than they are. Is it because when they go out all attention will be on their friend if their friends are prettier? So they want to be the same prettiness or a little prettier than their friend group?

It depends who the girl is and her level of insecurity within herself.

Very insecure girls, it doesn't matter how pretty they are, don't want to have friends prettier than they are or as pretty as them, because they need to be the prettiest to feel good about themselves. They have a need to one-up their friends and are typically easily jealous people.

Girls who are confident within themselves as people, will befriend anyone they get along with or click with, it doesn't matter if the girl is prettier than them or just a pretty girl. Because is friendships, personality is what matters.

Absolutely !! And even worse is the need for Queen Bee status. It is not nearly as bad with guys even though there is generally a leader of group.
