Did people really used to address their father as ''Yes Sir'' in the old days?

I was in shock when an older member in our family reunion said that. Then again that guy is already in his early 60's but seriously is that how you used to address your father as?

I find this ''Yes Sir'' overdone. My father never insisted me to address him as anything specific. Depending on the mood, sometimes I would say ''yes dad'' but other times replied with a ''What''.

Sorry but lol... if my father were to now tell me to address him like that, I would be laughing.
