Is my mom right or wrong for shutting down my brother's statement?

Tonight post-shopping, my brother (a preteen) and our mom had a conversation about this thing called the "monkeypox" or "monkey virus." He asked if it was not "kinda racist", and our mom got mad and lectured him that it was an animal and that he basically had no right to call that term "racist" in a really pissed-off situation.

But she also went on to say that "they're not calling a human being a monkey," but rather it is a term made up because the virus was "possibly" founded in monkeys.

In addition, my brother was going to bring up something about why the term "monkey virus" was considered racist, and he was going to say that someone else called it so and our mom basically said she doesn't care (but in a more subtle way).

According to the CDC monkeypox was first recorded in 1958 in an outbreak of a pox like disease on some research monkey.
What either of the persons did was assume things. The kid assumed racism because it's trendy to be offended about everything nowadays, and the mother got offended that the child was pretending to care about racism. Both incredibly ignorant.
