Unlike my brother I don't like asking for stuff especially money from my mom but the $5,000 can do me some very good in trying to get the car I desire. I'm nervous about asking though because its kinda of a lot of money, and yes she has the money to be able to give me it.

I'm asking her. You never know unless you try. She gave my brother $5,000 dollars and always giving him money.

Um no. Unless it's urgent and an absolute dire necessity but if it's just a luxury item then no. I mean my dad and I borrow money back and forth in that high range but it's usually at a necessity. The way I see it if it's a necessity and not just a desire then sure ask but if it's simply a luxury item a desire something that you're longing for because it looks nice and flashy then I would ask to borrow it. At this current moment my father is going to help me remodel my bathroom out of necessity we need to fix it to accommodate a wheelchair. but regardless he helps me like that because he knows I always have his back he also knows that I always pay him back whatever he lends me and then some and we never have to use the word borrowing I have always simply taken it upon myself to make sure I give the money back regardless of the fact that he's never asked me to that its just the respectful thing to do at a certain age once you pass the age of 25 we're not children anymore. And once we get into the age range of 30 to 35 we are responsible for our parents. our parents are now reaching the age of senior citizen so that's why I make certain I pay it back cuz I'm not a child I'm a grown up and my parents are reaching the age of retirement and their money is precious.
I never asked my parents for money as a gift, but I did ask for money ($3000, as a loan) so that I could buy a car. I drew up the personal loan contract and paid them back, with interest, two years later.
I don't know your specific family situation, but I suggest it might be better asking for a loan rather than a gift.
Because you are 36 and should at least expect to pay her back. Sooner or later you have to be completely responsible for yourself.
When I was 35-36 my father gave me some money when I wasn't working so I could go back to college full time. I had been on my own for a number of years and would never have expected or asked for it. But he offered and I took it. It was a lot less that 5K though.
@nawtee_me It very nice of you to help. My father is the same with me. And as you said I have never been asked to repay anything my parent has paid for however out of respect and thankfulness I do because I know my father didn't have to do it he did so cuz he loves me. Besides parents aren't endless bottomless pits of money.
