I do live with her right now because I am figuring out where I want to be and I work remote, so that complicates it for me. I've given her quite a bit of money, definitely more than whatever it costs to have me here. Besides for whatever she has in her 401K, she's always super tight on money, and she wants to buy her next car and doesn't want to finance much of it, so she wants like $20,000 from me for that. I have like $650,000, so it's not a huge burden on me, but that's still a HUGE amount to ask for, and just because I have it doesn't really make it "fair"...

Woah dude, $20k is an insane amount for your mom to ask you for, even if you have savings. A couple things to consider:
- Just cause you're living there doesn't mean she can nickel and dime you. That's your mom, she should want to help YOU save up too.
- Dropping that much cash will seriously dent your savings. What if you want to buy a house or start a business someday? Gotta look out for your future too.
- Her financial issues aren't really your responsibility. It was her choice not to save more in her 401k over the years.
- Maybe offer a smaller amount as a loan with clear terms of paying you back monthly. But I'd be real hesitant to just gift $20k, especially with no strings attached.
- Could you find your own place soon to get out from under her thumb? Might be worth it to avoid manipulation like this over money.
Overall dude, I'd say no way to giving that much cash, period. Offer a smaller loan if you must, but don't let her guilt or pressure you into spending your hard-earned savings on her poor choices. You gotta look out for #1 here!
It doesn't seem reasonable but I guess it depends on your relationship. I think most people would prefer to make a contribution out of generosity instead of having a demand made.
Don’t pay it if you don’t want to
