Why do Asians have strict parents?

They are a very conformist culture, in part because they are so old and so highly populated. The governments, particularly China, have bred compliance and will punish those who practice dissent. They instill in the citizens a work ethic that benefits society and country as a whole, but literally kills the individuals (look up 'karoshi', if you are interested in that subject.)

When they immigrate to other nations, they have a 'keep your head down, work hard' mentality. They want a better life, with more opportunity than what their own governments provide, yet they are treated as outsiders, often unwelcome, elsewhere. (This is true of most immigrants.)

It's also a very status-oriented culture in the upwardly-mobile realm. They do, deep down, want to rise above, and stand out, be recognized as being different, better. Asian parents want their kids to grow up to be something respectable, prestigious - doctor, engineer. They don't understand other professions to be as revered.

Test scores in education show that their parenting methods are successful, by this metric. But they quash individuality. "You are a grain of rice, remember that..."
