I never knew my parents had a dog. I was 4 years old when cancer took her away and have no memories of her. She was 7 years old. Since she couldn't have puppies, she treated me as if I was her pup.

I find it hard to believe but the dog I bonded with, that used to cuddled me nonstoppable looked similar to this one and it was that exact breed... wow:

I've heard horror stories about that powerful fighting breed. The thing is they can be more prone to aggression. Was this a case of a well trained dog, a mild tempered female or was I simply lucky?

Bull terriers were once known as "nanny dogs" because they were so sweet, loyal and protective. The Little Rascals' dog, Petey, was one of those. I guess that was before the trend of training them to fight in dog "pits". (Hence the name "pit"bull terrier.)

I don't know why those terriers were chosen to be the breed used for dog fighting. There are bigger dogs and dogs that have more powerful jaws. Maybe it's because the terrier breed has a lot of heart.

There are lots of small breeds that are very aggressive and can be ankle biters.

I've know people who owned pit bulls. Not one of those dogs was aggressive. They loved affection.

So it's all about the way they are raised and trained. There is nothing inherently aggressive about a pit bull.

Kinda. Dogs don't attack people for no reason, though that reason might not be a good or well-communicated one. It's also far from the majority of pit bulls that attack people, just more than other breeds.

I think it's both the way it's raise but also the genetics. Both have to be good. I still think my parents took a risk; something I'm not willing to do if I had a child. I wouldn't let a child be with a powerful pitbull.

Yes. It's a powerful animal, but under a good owner, the dog is harmless.

Sure you can make fire 'safe' and with proper usage it shouldn't hurt you, but it is still fire and it can still hurt you so you must respect the danger.

I have mixed opinion about the breed. Yes it never did anything to me nor anyone but I wouldn't let a small child be with a powerful dog.

I dont even think the breed is relevant.

Sure there are some great stories about dogs saving people etc but there are also stories of otherwise great dogs turning on people for no reason what so ever.

You simply cannot ever trust a dog completely, there is no such thing as a harmless dog.

I think it's called Rainbow Bridge when a pet dies and is there waiting for you. Once in a while my mother dreams about her. In the dream, she's happy and healthy again.

yeah she was a gentle/sweet female but my parents sure took a risk there. I wouldn't raise a child with a powerful dog like that.
