How can I help my neighbor? He urgently needs help. Does anyone know how I can help him?

So, my neighbor was talking to this woman that lives in our neighborhood. Through the conversation he found out that her husband physically abuses her. My neighbor felt bad about her situation, so he decided to help her. My neighbor spent his own money on a lawyer to help the woman in court. My neighbor even went around the town telling people that her husband beats her. We lived in a very small town, so word got around fast. The problem is that when it was time for the court date the abused woman didn't show up. Now everyone in the town thinks that my neighbor is a liar. The man that is being accused of abusing his wife is highly respected in our small town. (He was elected for a position in our local government, and he used to run a church.) Everyone is now harassing my neighbor because they think that he's a liar. My neighbor even got a few threats of violence. My neighbor attempted to call the abused woman, but she never picks up his calls or answers his text. I heard that the man being accused is getting prepared to sue my neighbor for defamation. How can I help my neighbor?

There probably is nothing you can do. He needs to talk to a lawyer. It was a mistake to get involved in that matter, but I suspect a lawyer can help him figure out a way out of it. He shouldn’t contact that woman anymore.

I suspect the man who has been accused of abusing his wife doesn’t want his wife being forced to testify as part of discovery for the suit
