When a gaslighter tells you that you heard wrong, or that you misunderstood them, do you react by harboring resentment and anger, or do you believe them and respond by saying 'oh, you didn't say that? oh, okay', and you allow yourself to feel stupid?
I call them out on their lies. I knew two people in real life - both cocky black men - who tried to gaslight me, telling me I was "lying" and that they themselves said things five minutes ago they never did. At first, I thought they were mentally ill and had memory problems (which you can argue they were), but then I just asked them, "are you trying to gaslight me right now?" and they doubled down. I stopped talking to them mid-conversation and let them keep lying.
I suggest that's what other people do, if they're smart enough to know they're being lied to. Call them out, and then stop speaking to them. None of the poll options really represent me here.10 Reply

+1 yKinda depends what you are talking about here. Some truth can seem like gaslighting.
But I've been gaslighted at work, it was intentional, and it was torture. I horbored anger for quite some time and it rises again at times. I wish I would have punched the one woman in the face at the time, but I didn't realize then what they were doing. It would have been fair, albeit, not very Christian of me.
It's amazing how people can justify what they do to others intentionally. Unintentional is another matter.
Get used to it, and grow in strength so you recognize and aren't impacted by them. Do listen for truth.
No wonder some people in this world go nuts...

I used to have this issue but honestly going forward I have been addressing that whether what was said or not , it has to do with intent. My abusive ex gaslighted me A LOT. He even was trying to make me second guess his cheating

+1 yNo I learned to stay my ground and I just repeat my answer (aka mostly the truth) and if they try to again dismiss it, I just mostly say low key kinda looking down on them "if you say so" and walk away

u +1 ynope... I have not met them, if I did I would not get involved with them
and then, I would not harbor any hatred or resentment, anger within me, non of that... if I ever do that it would mean to sabotage myself because that's usually what happens when you host that much negativity inside of you... you start to become quite bitter about and then take it on someone else
I don't want none of that20 Reply I'm so sick of stereotyping, ESPECIALLY from college aged people and trophy wife types, who claim to HATE stereotypes... yet automatically assume to know everything about everywhere around the world... while spending their every waking day going no further than the jogging trail in their neighborhood, or college classroom... that I now avoid the opposite gender (who mostly does it, in my experience) altogether. I can't COUNT the amount of college trust fund babies tell me they KNOW MORE about a place I GREW UP... than I do... and they've never been there. But it's because "They heard,"... or "Their professor told them," etc. It literally makes me want to put their head in a vise grip and squeeze their head until it pops. Because they REALLY BELIEVE they're enlightened... without actually having experienced wtf they're even talking about.😒

+1 yWhen someone explains that I misunderstood them, I neither conclude that they must be executing an elaborate scheme to drive me insane, smolder with anger, nor feel stupid. Misunderstandings, perceived misunderstandings, and differences of opinion and perspective are everyday occurrences and common factors in interpersonal relationships. I am able to take in stride some confusion about who said what and who misunderstood whom.

Nor do I leap to the conclusion that I “know true from false.” I know I am quite capable of misunderstanding and being misunderstood. Only a fool assumes that he must be right. I can express myself poorly and I can fail to understand others’ nuance. I am not so vain as to assume that that I am the stable center of the world.
+1 yI can read the writing on the wall, and the illiteracy of others doesn’t bother me so long as it doesn’t affect me. I still feel a duty to try and inform people of the error of their ways before it’s too late, however, if they are not interested in hearing it then, so be it. as long as it doesn’t harm me or cost me anything people who don’t want me to help them help themselves know what they can do with themselves.
10 ReplyThat depends entirely on how they try to treat me after they gaslight me. I keep great records of the things people say. I've learned to make mental (and sometimes even physical) notes of my interactions, specifically because of how many gaslighters I've dealt with.

+1 yI have a history of being fucking dumb. Definitely doubt myself now when I think I've caught on to gaslighting, whether it actually is or not. I mostly just avoid people who that happens with a lot. Either they're worse at communicating than most other people or they're gaslighting and either way I don’t have the time to deal with it.

+1 yI feel an insatiable compulsion to expose and publicly disgrace them.
Problem is, our society has the heart of Pharaoh. Until a literal angel starts cutting up some mofos like high school lab frogs, our most pigheaded NPCs will never change their tune on anything!
00 ReplyNo, I've been gaslighted (if that's a word) many times.. It's just a darker side of human nature to try and make the lie reality sometimes to save your own ass. My ex was a bit of gaslighter.. One time I showed her what she said and she got offended.. 😂.. I harbor no ill will towards..

10 ReplyStill living with it after 10 years of it. Anytime I see someone get yelled at, even a little kid I go into some form of PTSD and I start crying.
10 Reply1.7K opinions shared on Family & Friends topic. Why pay them attention and give anything of yourself to them to begin with... this sense they get from feeling you disheveled feeds their behavior. WRONG thinking and doing. Still controlled through resentment...

In the end of the day it is their problem, not mine. I can do whatever I wish despite their opinion.
