My mom and dad slammed the door on most topics. Never really got a good answer on why... whether it was upbringing or what. But couldn't talk dating, sex, personal problems, siblings, none of it. My wife's family was similar, but there it was because they were religious. So she couldn't talk about personal stuff unless it related to her family's religion.

Now, as a mom and dad of four, yes, we are very open about all topics. Life, challenges, hurt, love, dating, sex -- it's all on the table. We don't force it on them, but make sure they know that these subjects aren't bad or taboo or shameful or any of that. And that they can talk to us without judgement or anger or anything else. That talking to us is a safe space.

I m open to do that with my kids and grand kids. No matter the subject, it sometimes turn out just to silly or profound, i listen. I then ask if they want my input, if the answer is no, I just say I’m hereby if you need it, but be careful!
Sometimes, just listening helps, mirroring it back , so they know you’ve heard them! Being able to apologise, when you’re wrong help teaches them! Dads need to learn to hear a child out before reacting! I hugged and kissed my kids, there are scary things happening!
I adopted to boys, I treated no different than my two biological boys! We had rough time, but that all turn out well! But we as parents can only do so much! But we can give our children the time there require to be seen and heard!

Yes, very much so... so much in fact I had to learn to not ask for things I don't really want to know the answers about. I made that mistake a few times and now have mental images I never wanted.

My parents are very open to anything I want to talk to them about.

I can talk to my mum and my stepdad, but about different things. Like I talk to my mum about girl specific stuff like periods or whatever, but my stepdad is more chill for talking about boys and stuff.

I can talk to my parents all day about anything whether or not they hear me is another thing and they never give me am answer than I clean off their headstone and go home,
And I never had any kids so I can't speak on that
My advice to you is dont burn any bridge you can't rebuild its hard to talk to your parents at your age but when you get older and stop looking at them as parents and they stop looking at you as a kid and start looking at each other as a person communication gets a lot easier I started noticing a shift in my parents after I turned 21 and we started have a few drinks with each other that those walls started to come down so hang in there kids it does get better

My parents and I had an open door relationship. I could talk to them about anything and everything. They gave me options to my questions but never told me that I had to do any one thing. They left the final decision up to me. They would ask me what I did about the issue and usually said I made a good choice. I brought my kids up the same way.
