How can one avoid being overly-engaged when making new friends?

I'd say to just be very observant of your new friends' reactions to your behavior and adjust as needed.

Just be yourself. Trying to think to hard about not being “too” this or that will come across weirder in my opinion than just being your natural self. Not everyone will like you but those who do will because the like who you are

I am the kind of person who texts back immediately when I am free. I am super scared of getting on the nerves of other people I am chatting with, because I don't want to drive them away.

in that case, yeah, you’ll drive everyone away except for those who see things exactly like you, because people won’t be interested in responding so fast and getting in deeper, but is that really such a bad thing? at least the conversations will go somewhere. so wait for the right people to bring into your life as friends.

if a person seems interested in you, then they’ll text a lot too, and they’ll be conscientious enough to tell u when they have to do something and can’t text anymore. those are the kinds of people that you want.

Not really. I do not allow myself to keep texting a person who has not replied yet. Max one or two subjects. End of text.
