Is being pregnant (natural) with twins at 42 unexpected?

My aunt and uncle really thought they weren't going to have anymore kids. She's now 7 months pregnant with twins.

She didn't even had any treatment at all. She was in shock that she could still get pregnant. Is that totally unexpected? To not just get still get pregnant at that age but with twins?

You asked your question exactly right -- is it unexpected. The answer is yes. Very unexpected in many cases. That said, I went to look at WebMD for this and it said some interesting things. Quoted here:

"While 1 in 4 people in their 20s and 30s will get pregnant for any one menstrual cycle, only 1 out of every 10 people will become pregnant for any one menstrual cycle by age 40. At this age, you have a 44% chance of pregnancy within 1 year. This is because as you get older, the number of eggs in your ovaries decline." and "Childbirth at older ages has become more common too. Since the 1990s, birth rates in people aged 40-44 have gone up."

So, definitely unexpected, and less common than at other ages, but not as uncommon as we probably think. Congratulations to your aunt and uncle!

I actually heard that older women are more likely to have twins.

People well into their 60’s have become pregnant. My mother didn’t go into menopause until late fifties herself. All this “have kids by early thirties” is just old wives tales and fear mongering. Every woman is different.

She thought she was already done with kids and couldn't get pregnant anymore. They already have 2 older kids (one if 20 and other is 17).
