Right now I'm 19 and as a girl, I definitely think guys and girls can be friends if 1) the girl isn't attracted to the guy and the guy isn't attracted to the girl either OR 2) one of them finds the other attractive, however they know the other person doesn't feel the same way about them, and they have the emotional maturity to accept this and keep the relationship platonic. However, if one finds the other attractive, it can definitely be hard to keep the relationship platonic however it's just a skill you have to learn over time when you're mixing with the other gender.

So in other words, if neither party is attracted to the other staying friends is easy, if one person's attracted to the other it's harder. Because some guys have a very flirty personality, so it can be easy to misinterpret that and to enjoy their affection too much and start hoping for more. That's what makes it hard. And when one person likes the other, it's definitely easier for drama to arise because you are more sensitive to the things they say. But I think that with emotional maturity, guys and girls can definitely be friends even when ones attracted to the other (or if both find the other attractive, but one doesn't want to date the other because they don't like them in a romantic way, or just simply don't want to date for the time being).
