Should siblings share a room? Why or why not?

Setting aside family finance (which dictates the size of the living space) and gender (which should be a separate question) there are, I think, one main pro and one main con.

The con to siblings sharing rooms is lack of privacy Privacy is really important to kids.

The pros are two-fold: learning how to be a good roommate and learning how to share and cooperate.

Here's the thing: the privacy and room to be oneself outweighs the other stuff. IF you can get the space. That's not always possible.

If you don't have enough space to give everyone their own room or you have many kids, then I don't see why not. Or sometimes even without it it's a good idea (for example if you have twins).

Lots of adult siblings I know shared rooms when they were growing up. They all turned out fine. Opposite gender siblings should be okay sharing a room up until one of them is 10 at which time the situation should be evaluated, including speaking to the kids individually to determine if they would prefer separate bedrooms.

Why not? My father’s flat had two bedrooms, a kitchen, a toilet, and a dining room. I had to share my bedroom with my three siblings when we slept over at his flat. It’s quite hard to find a dwelling with four bedrooms. No, none of us complained about having to share bedrooms.

However, if there are more rooms, siblings can get their own.

I shared one with my brother when I was 16 as we sold our house a lot faster than my parents thought we would so we moved into a two-bedroom apartment for a year while our house was being built.

Close in age and same gender, yes if necessary. Otherwise, not really a great idea especially as they get older.
