When you end a friendship is it bad to ask for a few things you got them back?

YES! Gifts are not on a “lend/lease” program. Anything given to you as a gift is yours to keep or do with as you wish. Giving it back when things are over is little more than an act of spite. Don’t be foolish. If you don’t like the memories from them, re-gift them, put the “gifts” on Craigslist or other selling platform. Then donate any proceeds to charity. Or just give them away to strangers.

Gifts are given, you never ask for them back independent of what happens, only exception I can think of is if they are going to discard them.

They are entitled to keep any gifts you gave them, just like you can keep any gifts they gave you. It's wrong to ask for anything back. The only exception might be if you gave them a family heirloom that rightly belongs to your family.
