Can a friendship be restored after they once talk garbage behind your back?

Or is that friendship permanently killed? And that person will never trust you ever again nor like you at all?

My boyfriend's adoptive mother was the one talking behind my back for several months. I was friends with that lady. Many things happened and supposedly she's sorry. I'm still hurt that instead of telling me in my face what she doesn't agree or what I'm doing wrong, she smiled in my face and gossiped nasty things about me to family member, her friends and random strangers.

Is it worth giving a person like that a second chance? At this time, my image of that lady is that she's a backstabbing, fake person, a hypocrite, a liar. My boyfriend and someone else claims she is remorseful though and would like to start over. Can that be restored?

When it was the first time I found out all that... I was shocked. I actually wanted to cry. I had considered her a good friend, like a family member; only to find out that ugly side of her, her true color of what a backstabbing person she can be.
She told all those people about some of our conversation and my childhood fears too; making fun of me when I wasn't around. That's been going on for several months.
