I don’t have any kids on the way, but I wouldn’t homeschool. I think sending kids to school with their peers is extremely important for social development.

Also, not for nothing, if you aren’t a stamped and certified teacher, you shouldn’t be teaching. I was watching this reality show about a family of holy rollers, they homeschool their kids so they don’t get exposed to things the parents think are undesirable, and probably so they don’t learn about dinosaurs or something else that would contradict their Christian Fundamentalism.

The mother does the teaching, for like 8 or 9 kids, I think. She seems…. not great, lmao. She strikes me as pretty dumb, to start with. Then there was something where she was bickering with her daughter about doing something, and she brought up that she was behind on homework assignments, etc, and I’m just like “lady…. you, unlike a schoolteacher, are with this kid ALL DAY. And they live on some farm out in the sticks, she doesn’t have a job, I don’t think she leaves the property much. So that’s on mom to make sure she’s up to date on her homework and not falling behind in the first place. You hold more sway than a teacher does, you’re clearly not focused on your teaching duties, or you don’t demand enough in terms of discipline.

So I’d kind of prefer to see children taught by professionals who have been trained and have studied both the subject matter and the skill of teaching at a collegiate level than just some rando who just has some weird objection to their kids learning about and experiencing real life.

I wouldn’t have to worry about teaching (or NOT teaching) my kid (s) anything that would make them worse people, but I still can’t teach math as well as a math teacher, I can’t teach biology as well as a biology teacher, etc. They tell you it’s the same, but you’re getting “correspondence class”-level education. “Here, do this exercise in this workbook, and it’ll make you book-smart.”🤦‍♂️😂

One of the rinks I skate at has an in-house junior hockey program, teenagers from all over North America who are trying to play high-level hockey in the future, hopefully pro. They have some little classroom they go to a couple hours a day and get “tutored.” Just lmao, they probably spend eight hours doing hockey-related stuff. Same deal as homeschooling, I can’t imagine they’re getting top shelf education.

But yeah, between the lower-quality education a parent is likely only able to give compared to a stamped and certified educator, and the hit their personality and social skills would take by not growing up interacting with peers in a school environment like most of us do, I think homeschooling would put a kid at a definite disadvantage in life, almost certainly educationally, and quite possibly in their personality as well.

I'd never want to home school my kids unless I was somehow forced to live in a red state, but that wouldn't happen. I'd choose to live in a place where the school curriculum is exemplary.
