Would You Ever Consider Homeschooling Your Kid Through Middleschool Years?

i saw this tweet about a mom letting her seven kids of different ages through this thing where they went to preschool and highschool and College but she taught them at home bc she didn't trust the influence of middle school. and i sort of agree, for many people, middle school was just a hell of a ride, a myriad of negative experiences. from a social development pov, what she's doing makes sense. she's tailoring her education needs and let's be honest, we mostly had horrible time coping with socialization when we were that age. her children are blessed i feel

Nowadays all school work is assigned online via phones. I feel bad for students today.

No, to be honest. I want my kids to grow up socially confident, not isolated or socially awkward. Being around other children will help them make friends, create beautiful childhood memories and learn important things like sharing (especially through things like sharing food), teamwork, and empathy. Also, I think it's important for them to face challenges—like dealing with difficult classmates or mean kids, because that’s how they develop emotional strength, resilience and improve their problem solving skills. If things ever becomes too overwhelming/too difficult for them, their mum will always be there to back them up.

Consider? Absolutely. Do? Probably not.

My reasoning is very simple.
In terms of academic performance homeschooling beats even the fancy private schools - and that is without parent's having higher education. If I homeschooled a kid I could more or less assume A across the board. Not a jab at teachers, homeschooling is just a lot easier. Imagine if a teacher sat with your kid and your kid alone for 6 hours a day every day and the kid actually tries. Kid would be considered a genius within a year.

That said I still end up opting out of it. I feel it'd rob the kid of a pretty enjoyable bunch of years in most people's life. Yes, funnily enough attending an education will make them less proficent as far as education goes but the social aspect is important.

I also fully expect the future to put increased demands on social ability and lowered demands in academic excellence.

Depends on how screwed the education system gets when that time comes. As much as I'd love to keep my kid away from whatever new BS society comes up with next during the age when they're the most influenced by their surroundings, I also don't want them developing the same social issues I have by being overly protective of them. I would hope by that age my kid learns the rights and wrongs of the world to make reasonable choices of their own and let them see the world and choose the right people to surround themselves with.

If they had special needs that made out-of-home schooling difficult, yes. My niece is being home schooled for middle school because she has severe autism and had problem after problem at her previous school, and our government has recently cut funding for special needs assistance in schools so it was too difficult. My sister made the right call to pull her daughter out and home school her instead. Not sure if she’ll ever go to highschool.

I'm glad I raised a kid already, she had a hard time in midschool, I did, her mom did, everyone single person I talked to did. Elementary and High school were fine for me, but midschool's atmosphere was hellish. It looked like I came from LinkedIn and was thrown into GaG, 0 to 100, I can't recommend. I can't, I can't, I can't.

As a pre-teen, I would have loved avoiding midschool, at least the first 3 years, the last year was better, safer. People were suddenly more sane again.

As parents, homeschooling was never a possibility anyway, we were never in a comfy enough financial position to do that. There's also the thing with homeschooling having bad reputation somehow, I never questioned why that reputation though. It could be because we tend to associate that with sectarianism, culturally?

Taking them out of the system seems bad. They may already have friends, and it would be hard to convince the kid to go back when it comes to highschool. Already hard enough to make them go in the first place but if that's what they're used to they'll go.

If my kids were in the United States then yes. It’s honestly the type of school not especially middle school itself as a institution.


Actually speaking about middle school I think only a few countries have that system most have it as either part of primary or secondary school.

Just remember that going to school is 20% about the lessons and 80% about social interactions. If you're going to homeschool, you need to be sure that your children get as normal a social life as possible, because being an academically brilliant social misfit isn't the recipe for a fulfilling adult life.

would I consider homeschooling, yes... but for different reasons

not out of fear on "influence"

ideally, I would want children to develop a critical thinking and reasoning of their own rather than shielding them entirely from it... same as viruses, lol... exposure is what builds you up and makes you stronger (generally speaking)

isolation will weaken you and and also leave you less prepared once you, eventually... go out there and meet with the rest, lol

We already picked private schools for them in Luxembourg. Those are schools you have to book minimum 5 years in advance, among the best in Europe.
