I currently have an ex-friend trying to do the same, and I just don’t let it phase me. If it were something happening at work and it threatened my job or reputation at work which as result affected my ability to do the job, then I would report it to a higher up. That’s hostility in the workplace. But just in general I couldn’t care less. If I tried.
The thing is, I can’t dictate everything that will happen in my life but when I have the opportunity to choose my battle, it won’t be fueling drama. I learned long ago that their perception of me is a reflection of them, while my reaction to them is an awareness of me. If someone hears something about me, a real friend would ask me themselves, assuming they even care. When someone would rather follow the crowd and believe false claims then I know from then on they aren’t a friend of mine and I keep living my life.
I'd ignore them entirely.
