What makes a brother protective even if the sister is his same age or older?

My brother is my fraternal twin and 3 years ago (we were then 14 year-olds), he put himself at risk getting me out safely. He didn't want me to stay with him. He got rescued afterwards and only had minor scrapes from small falling debris, nothing major.

There was a chance he could've gotten injured badly or die if rescue didn't arrive on time. This has been a known behavior for ages; a brother protecting his sister even if it means getting risking his own life or safety. What makes a brother protective (not focusing on his own safety) even if we're his same age or older?

He preferred my safety over his. Why? What's the cause of his known behavior?

It could also have happened that a female saved a male. It's not exactly a law that males must save females, and never the other way around.

But maybe it is a... law of nature. ? Historically, "save the women and children" was often said, because with them, a future of our species can exist. To this day, many males know that they are the stronger gender, and whether it's familial love, or some sense of duty, their strength is something that they typically don't take for granted, when comparing to females.

(And this is why females must do things in return; be that providing emotional support, or maybe cooking or something to do with homemaking or making them comfortable and happy. Sounds old-fashioned now, maybe, but it's still one of our greatest strengths that we can offer to them in return.)

The short answer is: Because he loves you. You're his sister.

Perhaps his reflexes or decision-making were stronger than yours. Male brains have better eye-tracking capability. We have a stronger sense of smell. (For example.)

I wanted to stay with him and us getting out but showed me a passway and said run, get out. He kept saying ''don't worry about me, I'll think of somehing but you, get out now''. I felt terrible leaving him behind and he was telling me the opposite, to get out and don't worry about him.

When it was happening, meanwhile I wanted to remain with and both of us making it out, he was focusing on just getting me out and kept saying to run, get out now and not worry about him.
It's interesting how some things don't change no matter what year it is.
