I shook my mother during an argument, did I assault her?

We don't get along anymore and have been having arguments lately. She was 13 when she became a widow; dad died of cancer. I've called her names during a heated argument but it never got physical till Monday afternoon. Now she wants me out no later than next week. I'll be living with a roommate for the meantime.

In the latest argument, I backed her against the wall and started shaking her. I've noticed she got scared and she shoved me once to get me to let go. Then I felt terrible but it was too late. I had already done it. She counts that the same as hitting, that I just attacked me and she's still shocked, not really speaking to me much.

Did I assault her?

My own nickname says it all. Had I try pulling that stunt on my Mexican mother, I'll be finding myself seeing stars before even realizing what just happened. Latina mother are generally tough. If you haven't apologize to her, do so now and seek help.

I've never done to her in my life though. I feel bad but she doesn't want to listen to me that much to my explanation.

We were arguing about my past ex boyfriend, whom I continued blaming her for my break-up (he dumped me), then she was complaining about how I haven't been helping too much at home ever since the break-up, our difference in the way we spend our money (I've been wasting too much, I admit) and her saying I sound ungrateful and my attitude getting worse lately.

You went from a verbal argument to making it physical. You should never do that, and it's on you. If your boyfriend dumped you that's on him, nothing to do with your mother.

I understand my role and that's why I'm not begging and accepted the consequence of being kicked out of the house. The reason I blamed her is that I felt as if she didn't give my then boyfriend a chance for the start. She started disliking him right on the 2nd month and kept talking bad about him to others, excessively and loud enough for me to hear. I think if she would've been kind to him, our relationship would've worked out; he was my first.

That might be your perception, but it's unlikely to be true. If he was into you your mother's opinion wouldn't matter to him.

I don't know what was I thinking and wish I could take it back but can't. I've never gotten physical with her like that. That's the first time I've done that, never did that before.
