If you don't have kids, you have all your time to yourself. You can go out and do what you want, take a job anywhere you want, travel the world at the drop of a hat without having to consider kids' needs.

Kids are very demanding when young. Infants need immediate and regular care. They're delicate. Toddlers are a pain in the butt. From age 4-12 kids are pretty much a joy because they think you're king or queen of the world. However, you lose this throne from age 13 to 20, when you're an old fart, stupid, out of step, boring, etc.

But the worm turns and finally when they reach late adolescence, they realize all the annoying and seemingly stupid things you told them are mainly true, and that boy or girl dad or mom hated WAS an ass. Then you become consulting associates and mostly friendly toward each other.

You can then see the success and failures of your child-rearing. You still have time to make up for some errors during consultancy. And, hopefully, both of you will see each other with adult eyes. As you age, the best result of great child-rearing is you have kids who share their lives and their children's lives with you.

Without kids, you can do and create what you like with no guilt about not giving enough time to offspring that TRULY need a LOT OF TIME to navigate the world well.

If you enjoy kids but don't want one, you can teach or be involved in scouts, Big Brother, Big Sister, or a million other programs that HELP kids, but don't require you to be on call as a parent has to be.

cons: less time, giving up basically your life for something else, $$, emotional and physical toll, less social life

pros: everything else. it's rather hard to explain but... unconditional love, purpose, dedication, the joys of the every day things, seeing them grow (physically, mentally, etc)

there are consequences to having kids for sure. but if people like kids the pros of having children FAR outweigh the cons
