Was it ok to admit that I’m poor?

I’m on the dole, volunteering at the op shop, trying to find work. I haven’t found work yet, but I’m trying really hard. Then I spent all my money on having enough food to survive, work uniforms, which cost a lot and buying family birthday and Christmas gifts, which weren’t even that expensive. Now I’m broke for the next week and a half. So I told my friend, who’s invited me to watch his orchestra perform that I’m going, but I can’t stay beyond the free afternoon tea he’s invited me to, for a chat, as I don’t have any money left for going out.

Are you Australian? I've only ever heard Aussies call it the dole. If you are Aussie and you are doing work for the dole, chase your job provider up and have them pay for your uniforms. Job providers are meant to help with these things. They are also meant to be helping you look for work. They have connections. Job providers are also meant to help you buy work shoes as well. If you are with a job provider and they aren't helping you buy uniforms or helping you to find work, call and ask to change to another job provider.

It is perfectly okay to admit you are broke. Most of us have been there and know what it is like. Being on the dole, you really don't get a lot of money. My advice though. Until you do find employment hold off buying birthday gifts. Whoever you are buying for should be understanding that right now you aren't in a position to buy such things.

In the US in the 1930s it was called being on the dole but jot now. Good catch.

We have all been there, lacking money. If if people haven’t been there they just don’t get a lot of things about life. It strengthens a person and makes them appreciate things as stupid as that sounds to you right now given that you are living it today. Your friend should emphasize or at the very least understand.

Yes, it is completely okay to admit that you are poor and struggling financially at the moment. In fact, it’s healthy to feel able to be open and honest about your situation with friends and family.

There is no shame in needing to budget for your essential spending, and no one should ever judge you or make you feel bad for not being able to afford certain things right now. You should be proud of yourself for still finding ways to socialize and enjoy yourself even when you’re on a budget.

If you are worried about feeding yourself, you are an idiot for buying people gifts. You aren't in as dire of a situation as you make it out to be. I have actually been poor and hungry. You don't give out gifts if you are actually worried about food.
