Have you ever been poor?

Question

I lived some moments with little money but never poor.

My father's widow likes to lecture my half-brother and me on how she was poor back in her home country, so he should be thankful for everything he has, because when she was his age she wasn't even sure she'd eat that night, while he's preoccupied with getting the new videogame, etc.

For all the care I have for the woman, I don't think she realizes how bad she sounds when she tells me about her childhood in misery, while wearing a dress she couldn't have afforded if she didn't marry my father.

Poor and rich are subjective terms. In my country an average person earns around 400 usd per month. My family was pretty rich for my own countries standarts , my father was a contractor and my mother owned a private school but compared to people from 1st world countries we were mid class. We couldnt afford a ferrari but we had cars bmw or mercedes which was better cars compared to other cars on the street. The house I grew up was like a mansion. It had swimming pool, huge garden, it was extremely big. If you have taken it and put it somewhere in usa, it would cost at least 10-15 million dollar but here in my country if I sell it and move to us, I could only afford housing in a middle class part of the us.

Never, fortunate... I could have been if not for some wise choices made in sacrafice.

I was at one time... stretched in my budget, but had no risk. I can live cheap... live way below my means.

I'd listen to her but keep it in perspective... there is value in it that can be put to good use.

I remember when I was 6 years old and being raised by me single Mom.

We lived right near a dairy with cows being milked. Mom was flat broke and we were out of milk. So Mom put me and my sister in the car and we drove to that dairy - it was dark outside I remember. Mom walked up to the front door of the man that ran the dairy to beg for milk for me. The man just shut the door in her face and we went home. I remember mom crying in her bedroom.
She tried. She always tried.

Yes, we were consider poor or living below the property guidelines in our town based on our parents incomes…till us siblings started working.
with our moms guidance, we have become very successful with our career choices and our extra business incomes.

Accordint to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), by United States of America standards, I'm considered "poor" enough to pay $0.00 per month on my student loans debt (which is around $60,000).

This is the most money I've ever made, even adjusted for Cost of Living, so apparently, I've been "poor" my entire life.

There was a time when my family was struggling. We had a roof over our head for sure but we were struggling to buy food and my parents filed for bankruptcy. I didn’t realize it at the time but looking back I know now. We were getting food from food banks, we had to make several cutbacks and I remember my mom took me shopping and her card declined..

I’m definitely poor now, lol. But it’s only temporary and I prepared for it. I have no problem getting groceries, gas, or paying rent though. Just don’t have money to throw around anymore.

I've never been extremely poor, but I struggled through college, paying for rent, tuition, transportation and food. I ate rather meager (and cheap) stuff, and had little money for entertainment.

Maybe in money but never in love or spirit. It's not till I got older that I learned how poor we were. My mother and father raised 5 of us on a cops salary of. Which might have been do-able except one of my sister's had a chronic kidney condition that required her to have dialysis.

It's one of the things that drive me to this day. Because my parents sacrificed to give us kids so much opportunity that I feel I have to succeed. Or I feel like it's a slap in the face to them.

The family was struggling for a lot of my teenage years.. According to the paystubs we weren't "poor" but was definitely living paycheck to paycheck and sometimes it genuinely did seem like we were poor..

I have been in a condition of living from paycheck to paycheck, but I still do not consider that to be poor since I have always had a roof upon my head, plenty of food and clean water.

Only once, when I was too sick to work and the DUP forgot to pay me my Incapacity Benefit. I ended up owing the bank money, didn't like it at all. Always check your bank statements, people.
