Close friend -- as above, but share confidences and ask advice. Best friend -- the first friend you turn to, and the one you always rely on.

my best friends are my closest friends... and my closest friends are my best friends, both...

and if we go to semantics and definitions, both are still going to apply to all of them

Best friends are ones you can truly depend on for anything and tell anything to and they won't judge you. They are your ride or die.
