How would you react if one of your old friends told you this?

I’d respect their decision and just tell them im sad to see them go but it was good to know them

I’ve been through this a million times so unfortunately it’s not an ‘if’ for me and I know what I’d do because I’ve done it. I’d comfort them, do everything I can to make sure they don’t end it all, call their parents if I had their number, give them a stuffed animal and some candies that I know they love all while holding back my own tears. I’d hug them and let them cry on me until there’s no tears left and I won’t leave them alone until someone else who is trusted by them is there too or until I know they’re cheered up and won’t do anything terrible to themselves (usually means we have a sleepover). Then I would go home and cry my eyes out because I feel so sad that they’re feeling so sad. The next Sunday, I go to church and ask the staff members I know and trust there to pray over that friend without mentioning their names.

I forgot to add I’d talk to them about all the things they’d miss out on if they end it, like our ten year high school reunion, getting married, seeing me/our other friends get married, seeing how the next generation of our friends turn out, getting to watch and cheer each other on when the other succeeds, all that and more.
