Is it really selfish to buy for yourself frequently?

I get stuff for family sometimes, especially Christmas and birthdays.

Frequently? Yeah. Gifts are more meaningful when you aren't "required" to buy them. For example, it's more meaningful to give your parents or siblings or friends a present on a random Tuesday because you saw something that made you think of them than getting them something for their birthday. Most people expect something on their birthday, a card or a gift.

What do you get them vs what you get yourself? If you're getting yourself this super nice and expensive stuff, but you're getting everyone else cheap throwaway gifts, then yes it's very selfish.

Also, buying for yourself frequently is a huge waste of money.

The research says that people that buy for others are happier than people who buy for themselves. I think if somebody does not love others, they are punishing themselves, because they are missing out on something beautiful that makes life much more blissful and satisfying.

You’re very right, it’s just sometimes we want things and it’s hard to resist. I do enjoy giving to others just as much or more.

Those definitions are pretty subjective. At the end of the day there are always things you could be doing to lower suffering in the world at the expense of yourself but what kind of life would that be?

Don't you deserve to have fun and enjoy your limited lifespan as well?
