Why does it seem like he doesn’t want me to date his friend?

7 years ago, in college, I became friends with a guy named Martin. He has a childhood best friend named Mariah who also went to school with us. I didn’t interact with her much back then, but every time we did talk, she was kind. I moved away for work after college, so I didn’t stay in touch with her. But now I’m back home and getting re-connected with people from college.

Next month, it’s Martin’s birthday, and we’re all going on a trip to South Korea to celebrate. I remembered Mariah from our college days and asked him if she was single. He said yes, but then started recommending other women. He even suggested meeting Korean women during the trip instead of getting to know Mariah. I kept asking him why not her, but he stayed quiet.

I’m ruling out him liking Mariah, because he has a girlfriend. Could he be protective of her because she’s his childhood best friend? Does he fear that me dating her would ruin our friendship or his friendship with her? Or does he not trust me as a friend? I find this strange.
