What should I expect as a white British girl at a cookout?

Me and my husband moved to America around 3 months ago. It's been really hard but we've made some amazing friends who's help us so much out if the kindest of there heart.

Me and husband work together but in different departments are colleagues have become like a second family to us. Most are colleagues are black, I'm used to working with black people and I had plenty of black friends back home but I've never been invited to a cookout I think that's mainly a American thing.

My husband is really into BBQ and American cooking style. Back home he had a smoker and he had loads of cookbooks on it. He got talking to another colleagues about it and they've invited us to a cookout.

Apparently it's polite to bring a plate and I was thinking of doing some pigs in blankets but besides that I have no idea what to expect

Honestly it’s just a lot of friends, family getting together having a good time. You may have some little disagreements at them but that’s family. I’m not trying to scare you about that, but some family members can get a little out there especially if you have some alcohol. But even than the family members will handle it by telling them to knock their bs off. Family always have issues. You may have some shit talk. I don’t mean as in fighting, but let’s say someone loves the Cowboys and the rest of the family like the Eagles. They may talk crap to each other. BBQs can be loud, interactive, maybe jamming some good music. There might be some alcohol. Yes I’d be sure to take a dish. You don’t want to be that one family remember who shows up w out a dish but is the first to get in line to serve. Then when the bbq is over you’re the first one taking leftovers home lol when we have bbqs there’s usually like 30-40 of us. We grill, playing music as I mentioned. Play some basketball, maybe even toss the football. Just hang out, laugh. Some of us haven’t seen each other for a while. Just be social. Family members always pick on each other a lot. Their way of showing love. A lot of times women will make the side dishes like the Mac n cheese, always gotta have that. Potato salad, salads, desserts, etc. But you have to keep an open mind. In the black community a number of friends who I’ve hung out w at bbqs, some may be “ghetto” as someone would say. Like drinking 40s. We’ve thrown down some “bones” before, meaning played dominos. Dominos to some is a serious game. I don’t know the personality of friend you’ll be having a bbq w. You might hear the “N” word a lot in reference to each other. Again depends on how they are.

I would try to coordinate with the host or at least some of the other wives, and check with them about what you plan to bring - mostly to avoid 4 people bringing the same dish. These things are usually quite casual, so there's no reason to feel pressured, but it is thoughtful to bring a dish or a dessert or drinks or something. Maybe they'll ask you to bring sodas, or chips (crisps), or some dessert. Usually the hostess coordinates who is bringing what in order to make sure all the categories are covered and there aren't too many of the same thing.

Fruit salads are a hit at BBQs; if you bring a fresh fruit salad a bottle of whipped cream, it will go over very well. There are tons of great recipes on Pinterest. Just make sure the fruit is ripe and flavorful; a farmer's market or fruit stand is the best place to go.

It's very casual, so don't stress about it. Just enjoy the food and have fun!

Don't be surprised if a black guy offers to have sex with you, even if you're married. It's super common now in the states. Don't be afraid to try it, it's just enjoying your new culture. :)

A "Black bbq" and a "white bbq" have different cultural vibes so it really depends. I would ask the host what to bring. Both involve a good time. The games and food will just be a bit different depending on the culture of the host.

Why does it matter if you are white, black, etc. Also I go to American BBQs and also some Aussie ones, not really a huge difference. Ask what the host would like you to take and do that.

It doesn't matter its just a mix of cultures. White bbq is like potato salad and plain chicken 🤣 I dont know what food to expect. I don't want to come off rude or bring food they wouldn't like.

It seems like it's a big thing in America and in the UK bbq are very small. Is it like a big party?

Like why are they putting marshmallows on top of sweet potatoes that seems really strange to me but I don't to give off the wrong impression if I'm offered something different and i think it's odd
