Did this couple overreact?

Earlier today I went to McDonald's. There was this boy running around and screaming. He was probably 5. His mom was chasing around, and trying to control him. There was an older couple there. The boy ran up behind them and screamed bloody murder. The old women plugged her ears, and said "some of us have ears!" The old man said something, but I forgot what. I think he called the boy a little shit. The mom was like "don't talk to my son like that. He has autism. The old man was like "I'll say whatever I want to your sone. We're in public" I completely agreed with him, but I stood there silent.

None of us are angels or gods - we all make errors in judgment and we might sometimes be correct. You might believe the comment was appropriate, the mother might believe it was not appropriate or at least pretend to believe that it was not appropriate. You are entitled to your own opinion but only God knows which one is right. I do not know whether the mother is right or whether you are right. I could take a side but any side I choose to take would be a theory or a guess since I do not know the boy or the mother.

There was a court case local to me. An exclusive restaurant had a problem with a badly controlled child and made it child free the next day. The mother sued because it was her favorite restaurant and she was being discriminated against.

Basically the judgement was a draw finding it was indirect discrimination but not making any orders requiring it to admit bad mothers & child.

It continues child free to this day.

Well, responding with compassion could create a better atmosphere. Sometimes, speaking up kindly can help create a more understanding. The old man could have shown more wisdom and understanding in the situation. After all, it's just a little kid.
