Do you believe that friends can grow apart, or is it a sign that the friendship wasn’t strong to begin with?

Yeah, that can happen.
I was friends with Carla for maybe a decade. We took one or two road trips together and she wanted me to produce and play drums on her second album and then, for no reason that I know of, she chose not to even do the album! I hadn't heard from her, since. Nor will I ever again. 5 years ago, I stopped into see her best friend and she told me that Carla died a year before of cancer!! Had she kept in touch with me, I could've cured her!! Apparently, she DID do the second album without me. I just found several tracks from it online 2 weeks ago!!

Why wouldn't friends be able to grow apart? You're two unique individuals with unique lives and unique ways of interfacing with the world around you. It's only natural that those unique people could develop in ways that no longer prioritize each other.

Everything on this plane of existence is in flux. Nothing lasts forever, not even us. The measure of a friendship is kindness, understanding, and care, not minutes, hours, and days.

Was KMart a failure because WalMart supplanted it? No. Lots of people earned a living or got their start working there for generations. That's a success.

Same for friendships. They come into our lives and run a course. Sometimes it lasts a long time, and sometimes a short time.

Friends can grow apart like for example I used to be really close friends with this girl who I'll call M we were best friends from 2nd grade to 5th grade and we did pretty much everything together but once we started middle school she just stopped talking to me and during those three years of middle school she only spoke to me once and it's the same story with high school during our four years of high school she only spoke to me one time

They grow apart, but don't separate entirely. I'm still close with my childhood neighbors, even though we live in different cities and don't have jobs in common. Growing apart just means you don't have a lot of time to spend together. Like cousins, as you get older.

Even husband and wives and family can grow apart. We are all individuals at the end of the day. We all have our own needs and wants. Doesn't mean they must align with someone else's

The only thing they must align with is the law of the land. You get no choice in that.

Friends come and go in life. It doesn't mean the friendship wasn't strong, it just means the people change and grow apart. Your needs change, your interests change, you grow and change your whole life. I've had friends for 50 or 60 years that I've stopped talking to. It wasn't a fight, it wasn't even a disagreement, it's just that we've changed and grown apart. That's part of life.

A bit of both. I guess we all end up making different choices and choosing a different path and that causes people to drift apart but if you were friends but very different then possibly the foundation wasn't very solid anyway.

Things change. The friendship could've been plenty strong in the time and place where it was operative. But when things change relationships can too.

Though if it IS a good friend, you should still be able to reach out and get back in touch, no?

Friends grow apart. There’s nothing wrong with it - it just happens. Doesn’t make the memories any less special. Sometimes it’s just time to move on because you’ve evolved into different people
