Do you have a tribe?

When I was in my teen and twenties I worked out at a little gym that was in a shopping center. The members were really a close knit group. A few older guys took the time to help me train and gave me advice about school and girls and other things. They were the big brother that I never had.

There was a restaurant in that shopping center and anytime I wanted to hang out with somebody I just had to go over there after my workout and there would always be some of the guys in there.

One of the first questions I asked when I joined GAG, was about people you would consider an unsung hero in your life and I vividly remember you talking about being an awkward overweight teen and how those guys took you under their wing and inspired you. Your story at that time really stuck in my mind. It's great that you have such fond memories. Have you lost touch with them?

Hi Becky, I really have lost touch with all these guys. The gym closed long ago and we all just lost touch. I know than one has died. A few years later I read that he was driving his corvette past a pond and saw a couple of kids that fell through the ice and he saved them. He really was a hero. A couple of years later I read that he had died. I have seen his Corvette a few times. I think his son is driving it.

He was definitely a hero. It sounds like they had a huge influence in your life, I also think the interest they showed and time they spent with you shows the type of person you are. I really don't have a story like your's. The closest I can come is a "babysitting" club I had with two friends, after two months all we did was fight about not splitting money properly and other girls getting gigs on their own. It had an ugly ending 😂😂

@Beckybooboo I have made fitness and health a priority in my life and i really owe these guys a lot.

When I worked at Disneyland, a bunch of us would go back out into the park after we got off work to have fun and go on the rides because for us it was free. When I quit to go to college it was sad, but we kept contact for many years. I still see some of them on Facebook.

When I was in high school, we were required to do some type of class or extracurricular activity that involved public speaking. I chose to do a school play. I was suddenly with a group of people I had never met but over night we became friends. Since rehearsals were at night, we would all hangout afterwards, whether at someone's house or we'd grab a bite to eat at a restaurant. During school we'd rarely talk or hangout but during rehearsal and afterwards, we were a tight group and stayed involved with school plays throughout our time in school.

I have a few friends in whom I confide, and who I can call to hang with when I don't want to be alone, but I don't have a gang of buddies. I do have an extended church "family" that cares about me and we are all closer than many real families.

I had a tribe back in late 70s and till mid 80s. We kept in touch but not like we promised in 1981. They are all gone but one and myself now. Lost the last in 2023 on a bike crash. The one still alive has been addicted to smoking meth for over 20 years. We don't speak.

No, I had a tribe in high school, and another tribe in college, but not since.

i tend to hang out with older guys because they have more life experience and know more.

Haven't that much this year - it is more by arrangement now.

I don't really have a tribe and I wish I did. What you described sounds really nice.
