I’m curious how long you had to work to achieve such a tragically bad relationship with your own kids that you feel this negatively about them. Children treated with respect and understanding appropriate to their age might, of course—mainly due to their limited experience—completely disagree with their parents’ opinions. However, a conversation at the child’s level, free of pride-fueled comments and focused on presenting and understanding both points of view, should lay the groundwork for negotiation.

A child’s opinion, even though they don’t fully know the world yet, is still important because it’s theirs. In negotiation, both opinions are considered. A child treated this way will not only willingly listen to their parent’s perspective but will also share their own thoughts. This gives the parent access to the child’s point of view, which can then be taken into account.

Kids who trust their parents—and yes, even with your own children, you have to earn that trust—are more willing to try out solutions beyond just their own ideas.
