Why does the US lack a strong community?

There are too many people who complain about everything wrong with society or nature or the gov or the economy or their neighborhood, but nearly all of them do nothing to help eachother during situations where they can. I've seen it countless times.

PS: I'm sure people will misinterpret this in quite a few ways because they're dumb about systemic cascades and how economies, communities and ecosystems need to function to be sustainable, or about how specific laws effect everything via domino effect, but whatever.
