What do you do when you have a brother in law who is talking shit about you behind your back to your wife?

I'm not going into details, but he said some things about me, this man who I have spoken to in years, who I never speak about, started talking shit about me behind my back to my wife, upsetting her, making her cry. And so on.

I guess it depends if what he says about you is true or not. If it's true then it's on you to deal with the consequences of your own actions I suppose. If he's telling lies about you then that's different. He probably deserves to be confronted about it in front of everybody.

He is definitely lying. He essentially told my wife that someone told him that I hate him. Which is absolutely untrue.

Okay, I thought it was something bad like cheating, or that you committed some crime or something. Just tell your wife that you never said that you hated him to anyone, but if he's gonna be lying and starting drama for nothing, then that's just dumb. Ask her who told her brother that you hated him? Then go from there and get to the bottom of this nonsense so it can be resolved.
