It's hard to compare since the exact location makes a big difference. You can't talk about costs in the US without knowing the location. I'm sure the same is true of Australia. In the US, the cost of housing varies by 5-10X or more. That's not a trivial difference.
Several years ago I took a glance at some real estate listings in Australia. They were pricey compared to where I live, but not too bad for big cities.
