If it was to my own kid to not overcomplicate it...

"When you love someone, you feel bad when something bad happens to them. You feel happy when something good happens to them. And it can be painful to live without them in your life."

I'd ask them for a hug and after the hug, I'd ask them "Would you feel bad if I wasn't around?"

If they answer yes, then I'd ask them "Would you feel bad if I get hurt?"

If they answer yes, then I'd ask them "Would you be happy if I'm happy?"

If they answer yes again, I'll say "Well then you love me. And I love you because I feel the same about you."

But love can also be complicated and make you do crazy things. I can't really explain those things to you now because you're quite too young to understand completely just how profound and deep love can go but just know that love can be both a simple and complicated thing.

Be glad that you for now only have to deal with the simple part of love like loving your mom and dad or your favorite toy as I mentioned before.

We can't really explain why we love the things we do only that they bring us joy and happiness when we do love these things.

But if somewhere you cannot define a beings action in "Cause & Effect" Perhaps there is an Anomaly which has no Defining properties and that Anomaly is "Love"..

there's no point In Lying to a child regarding love, because once you hit a certain age there is no love. Your thrown to the side by everyone, for your looks, your weight, and the fact that you won’t have sex with someone.
