Would you believe gossip about someone?

I have this friend who was posting stuff online about her husband. People around our small city love to gossip and be nosey when you’re not publicly known. Facebook is our families way of staying connected and in communication. well people was saying that my friend is mentally ill and etc. people blocked her and etc only based off rumors and recruitments. Others were recruiting others to not like her as well. Now they discovered she was telling the truth about a situation regarding her husband. Her husband now ex friends were also involved. We live in a small community where people are quick to trash you and your life with gossip. Lies get around quicker before the truth put its pants on

I used to be the supervisor for about 100 employees with an additional 50 volunteers, and 50 support staff. There was A LOT of gossip! However, there was only ever one person in the office I believed 100% of the time, and that was the House Keeping Manager. We became good friends and would frequently talk. The thing is, when you work in house keeping, people tend to ignore you like you don't exist, so they say and do a lot because they thought she somehow couldn't see and hear. I knew everything from her. Literally all the gossip from who was being hired, fired, who slept with whom, who did that crazy thing on the weekend, you name it. The one thing I really liked about it was her discretion. She would tell me because she knew I wouldn't repeat it, and anything I told her, she did the same. I would pretend like I didn't know something was happening that she'd told me like 2 weeks ago, and vice versa. It was also never really mean gossip, just point blank, this is what happened or someone said this. Other staff, I wouldn't give them the time of day with their gossip because it was like playing telephone---someone said 1 thing to 20 people and by the time it got to me, 90% of it was wrong.

I think as far as fb and small town people are concerned it makes the perfect storm for something like this to take place, no offense.

Some are afraid of their own image, reputation, get closer to a group, want themselves to be accepted so they push out, alienates someone they see as that threat. I bet she knows lots of secrets about them too and they were afraid she was going public about it. This why they had to take her down before she did them.

They say I'm not fun to gossip to and the gossipers pretty much leave me alone as they get afraid I am going to get the one who the gossip is about and try to resolve, get to the bottom of what's going on, they're afraid then. I think the one they gossip about has a right to know what's going on behind her/his back. Gossipers do not like me. I don't play along.

It depends some people spread gossip that isn’t true to be vicious. Other people are telling things that may be partly true but key details may be removed or…. It’s exaggerated or details added in.

Such as…. If someone cheated and now there is a divorce. But the other partner has a new partner before the divorce is finalized. So the original cheating partner accuses the other or cheating…

People also love talking about others because it gets negative attention off of themselves. Makes them feel as if they have the upper hand.

There is such things as smear campaigns. And divorces are the worst. You have to be all for one person or the other. And people will act if you’re not all for them… you’re against them. When many times thats not the case. It can split friends. When people expect me to choose sides. Fuck you…. I didn’t asked to be brought into the drama.

I like to stay attuned to what's going around the rumor mill, but I never believe anything I can't verify on my own.

I also want be able to correct anything false that's going around about me or about anyone I care about.

I walk away from people that gossip. Because most do have a life no friends nothing and if they can get one person to stop there day and listen they. think they have got friend for life

No, unsubstantiated claims are just that. More importantly, how do you feel about the person (and do they raise red flags) should be the thought process.

Hmmh. Generally not but I have found gossip to round out what I have known. I don't discount it but the biggest point to me is X wants me to think Y about Z. That I count as a fact

Random gossip, no, but if I hear a lot of first-hand accounts from trusted sources and the stories match (positive or negative) then there's something to it.
Gossip from untrusted sources is treated with a grain of salt.

It depends on what the gossip is and how well I know the person. My initial reaction when I hear something about someone is to believe it, unless it doesn't make sense or I know something differently.

Only if I thought it was in line with their personality. A lot of gossip is just malicious lies, and I treat it as such.
