If your grandparents lived in a time when they could buy a house for $10, why didn’t your parents or you inherit it?

I can guarantee you both of my grandparents' houses were a LOT more than $10! I very seriously doubt there has EVER been a house that sold for $10 unless it was very special circumstances: money owed on a tax lien or someone just being very gracious about selling to someone very close to them.
The house I grew up in was built in 1900 and my grandparents bought it in 1936. When grandma died in `74, she eft it to dad. When he died in `06, he left it to mom, when she died in `16, she left it to me in her Will but, my greedy ex-sisters contested that and eventually had me kicked out and sold the house!! My aunt took me in here at what used to be my other grandparents' house. It was built specifically for them in 1963 by their son. When grandma died in `99, she left it to my aunt. When she died in `21, she left it to me. She also left me with a mortgage I can't afford to pay, at the moment!! The bank refused to take my money 4 years ago, when I had it!! Now that I'm nearly broke, they want 11 times what I have!!

both of my parents had a lot of siblings, tons... so it was not like they could just say "this should be mine"

on both sides, the house was passed to the youngest sibling's grandkids... the ones that would be able to keep them for longer and preserve them too

also, both of my parents decided, long time ago... not to inherit anything from my grandparents because other parts of the extended families almost "went to war" over situations like that and my parents just don't like drama

Nice large houses in cities were $10,000 to $20,000 in the 1940s, which would be people's great-great-grandparents. No one was buying houses for $10 unless it was Pa Ingalls. Grandparents now would have bought these same kinds of houses for $150,000 to $250,000 “in their day.”

The minute houses are inherited by children, they are sold for cash, and the cash is gone within 10 years.

90% of today's society are low-lifes who don't value anything, not history, not tradition, not education, not intelligence, not decorum, not civility. Most neighborhoods are upscale versions of trailer parks.

Because the house was sold after my grandparents died. And it wasn’t $10. It was like $100,000.

Because my family didn't have single children so houses get sold to spread it fairly among their kids rather than allowing 1 to have the house while the other gets nothing.
Nobody thinks about this when having kids...
If you only have one kid it's easy to just past the house down, but people have multiple.
