Is it strange to deeply wish I had a protective older brother?

I know this may sound emotional, but I’ve wanted an older brother my whole life — a real older brother bond. Someone protective, understanding, supportive, someone who feels like they’re actually on your side no matter what.

I’ve never really felt understood or emotionally connected to the people around me, and I don’t feel very close to my family either. I’m the older sister in my family, which is why sometimes it feels strange always being expected to be strong when deep down, I’ve always wished I had someone older to lean on too.

It feels lonely always being expected to handle everything on your own while secretly wishing there was someone beside you for once.

The people who were supposed to make me feel loved, safe, understood, and cared for never really did. I think that’s probably why I’ve always wished I had an older brother ever since I was a kid — someone who makes you feel protected, valued, understood, and less alone in the world.

I know no relationship is perfect, and maybe I’m idealizing it a little because I never had it, but whenever I see people with older brothers who genuinely care about them, it honestly hurts in a way I can’t really explain.

So I guess I wanted to ask the guys here: What does it actually feel like to be an older brother to someone? Do you naturally feel protective over your younger sibling? Do you actually care that deeply, or is it different from how people imagine it?

And for guys who don’t have younger sisters, have you ever wished you did?
