Is my partner’s mom insulting my baby by saying he looks like a girl?

My partners mother keeps mentioning that my son looks like a girl.

is she trying to poke at me, he literally looks like a boy and he’s a baby.

firstly it was he looks like a girl because of what he was dressed in. Literally just a crochet aqua cardigan.

is she trying to get under my skin by attacking her own grandson.

or am I completely over reacting because i don’t see it as a compliment.

I've learn that older people have no filter and think it's acceptable to say everything that crosses their mind. My 86 year old grandma thinks it's okay to comment on other women's weight, we had to call her out when she told my cousins wife she was getting fat. She still doesn't get why we told her that is rude. Chances are your grandparents are unaware they're being rude.

I definitely don’t think she’s trying to insult the baby, I’ve heard women say this several times in my life and it’s not meant to be shady whatsoever. If you and her haven’t had the best relationship then maybe that’s why you’re taking it this way.

I can’t speak for everyone but from my experience it’s not about misgendering, he’s just a very pretty boy. I’ve heard mostly older women say this but younger ones here and there. In any case, I can’t tell you how to feel so if you’re insulted then talk to your husband about it. I just feel like this is one of those “choose your battles” situations and this doesn’t have to be one. Especially if you have no previous history of issues with her, you haven’t even gotten to meet her in person. I get it, you’re a new mom and watching out for your baby. But she’s not an enemy, and the moment you start turning her into one, that’s a road that is hard to turn back from. Future stresses, future issues, confrontations, like that’s all so avoidable. Just be peaceful, set boundaries if it makes you comfortable but again, choose your battles.
